The potters hands.

Jeremiah 18:3-4

So i went down to the potters house, and there he was working at his wheel. and the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potters hand, and he re-worked it into another vessel, as it seemed good for the potter to do so.

Another reference to a potter shaping a lump of clay is in Isaiah 64:8 where we read- ‘we are the clay and you are our potter; and all we are the work of your hand. ‘

These references both paint pictures of God being our creator. When i read this verse, I initially underestimated the amount of skill and time which goes into creating a piece of pottery. It takes a large amount of concentration and care to apply the correct force, and to gain the correct shape and finish.  We have a sovereign God who like the potter, fashions us according to his will. He moulds us and shapes us into becoming more like him. This can often be a painful process but the results are beautiful. However broken we are God can restore us and make beautiful things out of failures. I find the most comforting part of the verse that even though the clay was spoiled he didn’t retrieve a new piece he simply re-worked the flawed jar to perfection. How amazing. Gods begun a work within each one of us and he will bring it to completion!
