Matthew 5: 1-12

Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

John Wesley speaking on the Sermon on the Mount poses: “Jesus is teaching us the true way to life everlasting, the royal road that leads to His kingdom and the only true way to live”

The Latin word for blessed is ‘beatus’ and in the gospel of Matthew chapter five, we have an account of Jesus starting off His teaching with eight statements beginning with the word that can be translated ‘blessed’. We find that Jesus wasn’t teaching for the crowds, but for those who were committed to following Him. They weren’t/arent rules to follow to earn a place in Gods kingdom…(that is done by Grace alone), instead these characteristics represent true servant hood. They are not merely a list in which we can feel free to exercise our favourite as we please, they are commands from God, commands which will shape us  and mould us into His very likeness and are pleasing to Him.

The traits too open doors to happiness; for when we are filled, we are brought great satisfaction and lasting happiness like no other, a happiness which only God can satisfy. Not only this, but attached to each characteristic is a promise from God! Promises he always keeps!

This year one of my resolutions is to try to exercise these traits more resonantly in my life. So for the next few days journey with me as i focus on each Beatitude in turn.

Have a lovely day.
